Today’s guest post is really special (and cool)!
It’s about a coloring book that accompanies Deanna Fugett’s upcoming debut, Ending Fear!
Totally cool, right? I thought so too and truly can’t wait to meet all these characters, especially after seeing all the beautiful characters (which you will too in a moment *winks*).
I still think it’s genius to have characters named mainly after emotions. It was actually one of the first things that drew me to this book in the first place, but let me share the book with you first and then dive right into this fun coloring action (because adults need to color too).
About the Book
Fourteen-year-old Fear learns she was a parachute baby, dumped over the edge of the Gliding Lands as an infant. Fascinated by the floating cities in the sky before, now she’s desperate for answers. But a slave isn’t likely to get those answers.
When her abusive Downer family throws her from their hovel, Fear takes refuge with a family who shows her love for the first time. Surely they can’t be trusted. Years of abuse and molestation has taught her that.
Then her brother discovers where she’s hiding and tries to kidnap her. Fear will never let him touch her again. Her new family conceals her at The Fallen, a ranch that hides parachute babies from the Uppers who discarded them.
Just as she’s beginning to embrace yet another home, Fear’s new little sister, Happy, is kidnapped and taken to the Uppers’ temple harem. Fear must go against her namesake, find a working hoverpod, and journey to the dreaded Gliding Lands before the little girl’s innocence is ripped from her forever.
Can she save Happy in time?
And will she find answers to the burning question of why anyone would throw her away?

Bring the characters of Deanna Fugett’s debut novel to life with lovely illustrations by the talented artist Keighley Kendig!
How did this coloring book thing come about, you may ask? Well, it’s actually a pretty cool story.
Last summer when my dad and I were creating my website (he was my webpage designer), I had this fanciful idea that I would include a headshot of all my characters and their bios below that. As I was toying with the idea, the awesome author Ronie Kendig posted on The Realm Makers Consortium (shout out to my Realmies!) about her daughter who was an artist, who was offering artwork for my kind of price.
Keighley Kendig was just starting out and had a nice low price that I couldn’t pass up. So I hired her immediately. I commissioned headshots for ten of my top characters.
It was such a fun process. I sent her pictures I found off the internet that matched my characters’ looks along with detailed descriptions of each character. The end results were phenomenal, and I was so excited with them that I HAD to show my publisher. Sad part is, I still haven’t gotten the headshots up on my website yet. (A whole year later. SHAME.)
Well…my publisher LOVED the pictures just as much as I did, and to my surprise she said she wanted to make a coloring book of Ending Fear, using Keighley as the artist! I was flabbergasted, confused, and excited. I had never heard of a coloring book that went with a novel before.
I looked it up and surprise, surprise! This was the new trend in YA, to have an adult coloring book to go with the novel. What a cool concept! So I figured, why the heck not? Let’s do it! And…we did. 🙂
And I am so glad you guys did, Deanna! 😉
Meet the Crew!
Look at these beautiful faces! So excited to meet these characters!
Here’s another preview from the coloring book of Hate, Fear, and Manly (which greatly peeks my interest with the look Fear has and how she’s grabbing Manly’s jacket).
