Hear ye, hear ye!
The Unicorn of Judgement has arrived!
All show respect in its presence as it walks among us.
Yes, my friends, today I’m very excitedly featuring an amazing Unicorn from Janeen Ippolito’s new novella, Priceless. (It just happened to release yesterday!)
Read on to discover who The Unicorn of Judgement is and just why you might not want to get on his bad side. 😉
About the Book
A little ambition can turn into a lot of trouble, even for the city’s wiliest double agent.
After years of rebel spywork in the dragon-human war, Nula Thredsing is ready to claim her legacy.
As the Scepter of Commerce’s new liaison to dragons, she’s one step away from the old family seat on the city council. But during her first meeting with dragon diplomat Tiers Sunscaler, they are attacked by rogue dragons—one of them Sunscaler’s former tactical partner, who is bitterly determined to keep the sham war in action and turn the diplomat to his side.
At the same time, Nula and Tiers discover a startling connection: an embermate bond. While a political marriage suits Nula, the bond’s side effects are obnoxious—and potentially deadly.
Aided by an unexpected cat-dragon and a mysterious unicorn, Nula and Tiers must track down the rogue dragons before their dangerous bond tears them apart.
Fortunately, Nula is used to impossible odds—and this time, she has a dragon on her side.
A steampunk fantasy novella with espionage, cat-dragons, snark, and a side of romance.
Dragons aren’t the only shifters in town in the world of The Ironfire Legacy. Each continent was created with its own type of shifter—and the unicorns of Elotrin are far less extinct than Nula Thredsing and Tiers Sunscaler were led to believe.
How do they learn the truth? By the presence of none other than the Unicorn of Judgement himself, Lirome Ukerys!
Lirome shows up in Priceless thanks to the machinations of Freckles the Cat-Dragon. Apparently, Freckles and Lirome have a history, so when Nula is in trouble, Freckles decides bothering his unicorn friend is the best option. Connecting Lirome to Nula and Tiers turns out to be a very good idea (trust a cat-dragon), because Lirome has vital skills and information necessary to assist the human and the dragon. In return, they help him track down his long-lost sister, who has been held captive by the Curious Intrigue for ten years.
Why held captive? Well, she’s a amazing healer and…yes. That’s all he’s saying. A man of secrets and quiet sarcasm, Lirome is also an extremely skilled healer and like all unicorns, a soul empath who can sense other’s emotions and read their souls upon physical contact. This means he’s very good at sizing up others and being all judgey. It also makes him remarkably caring, in his way—but he has limits about a certain pushy countess who wants to know far more than she needs to. Like why his eyes sometimes turn blood red, why in hoof form his horn is coated in poison, and why the scent of sulfur follows him.
Such answers are on a strictly need to know basis.
But Lirome is willing to offer insight from the plans of the Curious Intrigue—knowledge borne out of a deeply personal tragedy and a deadly choice he and his fellow unicorns had to make for the sake of their survival.
When I first created Lirome, I only planned on him being a limited side character to his sister, Maira Ukerys. Famous last words, as always! My intuition said “naaaaah” and now Lirome is going to show up in Faithless: The Ironfire Legacy Book 2. When I wrote the back story of unicorn shifters in Elotrin, and their descent into death unicorns who became killers because of brutal tyranny, I didn’t intent on them crossing over into Sekastra, where the dragons are. I just wanted to explore what would make a race of soul empaths and natural healers turn violent. However, when I went to write Priceless, the death unicorns showed up! After all, refugees have to go somewhere.
Also, the deeper I delved into the reasons why the Curious Intrigue started the dragon-human war, the more I realized that the nefarious plans were inspired by the dark history in Elotrin. A history that has been covered up lest it be repeated and is only known by the top officials in the Lawless.
And there is a special, specific destiny for Lirome, the Unicorn of Judgement, to fulfill.
But that’s #spoilers.
Guess you’ll have to just keep reading to find out!
